After living in Florida for approximately two years, my husband and I decided to go back north. At that time it was difficult to sell a home because you were competing with lower pricing on new construction with all the bells and whistles that attracted buyers. In the last two years we poured a lot of money into the house, and we knew we would not recoup, but we wanted to leave and as soon as possible. Like so many moves before, I knew what I had to do. First, I packed up all unnecessary items, for example family pictures, clothing, books and especially the kitchen so I didn’t have to cook. Cooking just made a mess that I didn’t want to clean up everyday. Next, all the packed boxes were placed neatly in the garage. Finally, I started the cleaning routine. It was done everyday. I made the beds, cleaned the bathrooms and kitchen, dusted, vacuumed, and washed the ceramic tile. Nice towels were laid out in the bathroom. I opened all the window treatments to let light into the rooms and to show the views. I kept up with the laundry, and hid things in my draws I didn’t want buyers to see. Our lawn and pool services took care of the outside of the house. Perspective buyers came everyday. Just before they arrived, and apple or chocolate chip cookies were slowly baked in the microwave, so the house smelled like home. I did this everyday for two solid years. That always worked before, when we sold our homes. The competition was stifling. Then one day on the radio, we heard about a woman who sold her house right after she purchased a statue of Saint Joseph and buried him upside down in her front yard. We weren’t Catholics, but we were game for anything that would work. My husband and I found a religious store not too far from our home. When we arrived, they only had a very large Saint Joseph and a medium-sized. It seemed everyone who was trying to sell their house in Florida, was listening to that same program and ran out to buy a Saint Joseph statue. According to the owner of the store, there was a run on the saint, and all their stores were in short supply. Desperate, we purchased the last two. We kept the large one and gave the other to a friend of ours who was also trying to sell his home. With great reverence, we placed Saint Joseph in a plastic bag and buried him upside down in our front yard and waited. Wouldn’t you know it, the very next day some buyers came and made an offer on the house. We were so pleased, we decided to dig up Saint Joseph and take him with us. It was decided, he would be seated in a place of honor. The strangest thing occurred. We knew where we buried him, but when we tried to dig him up, we couldn’t find him.
